About us

The destination for relaxation

Mochiya is home to the original mochi pillow — little clouds of ice cream or sorbet enrobed in sweet rice-dough — served with masterfully balanced teas. A fusion of Japanese culture and the art of European pastry-craft, blended in our East London kitchen.

All natural. All good.

Founders' story

Welcome to Mochiya, where East meets West in a delightful fusion of flavours and textures. Our journey began when Shuji, a passionate foodie born in London, discovered the love for mochi while selling over 3 thousand types of Japanese snacks worldwide. Recognising the growing mochi trend in the UK, Shuji sought a partner to blend Western confectionery with traditional Japanese recipes, leading him to Florian.

Florian, a Swiss-British talent with a rich culinary background, embarked on a global pastry adventure, from Brussels to Taipei, bringing a wealth of experience from renowned brands like Pierre Marcolini and COVA Taiwan. In 2016, he founded Panoramix Project, delving into pastry teaching, consulting, and catering. Despite challenges in Shanghai, Florian's culinary journey brought him to London in 2022, where fate led him to Shuji in March 2023.

United by a shared vision, Shuji and Florian, with invaluable support from Adam, set out to create Mochiya. Florian's meticulous exploration of over 30 mochi recipes shaped the brand's defining texture, marrying traditional Japanese standards with a palate-friendly touch for the British audience. Our dynamic, colorful brand encapsulates the best of both worlds, East and West, offering a unique experience in every bite.

Dedicated to quality, we meticulously source ingredients, from Italian-style gelato crafted with fresh fruits to teas directly imported from Japanese and Taiwanese farmers. Handmade in our local London kitchen, every step of our mochi-making process reflects a commitment to authenticity. Florian's immersion in the mochi world, training with a Japanese master chef, ensures that our creations honor the diversity of this ancient treat. Our all-natural treat is suitable to be enjoyed by everyone young and old (and all inbetween).

At Mochiya, we go beyond mochi, continually developing innovative food concepts, pairings, and creations. Our journey is a celebration of exploration, embracing diverse textures, flavors, and origins. Join us as we redefine the mochi experience, a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, brought to you with passion from our kitchen to your palate.

What is Mochi?

Mochi is a traditional Japanese treat made from glutinous rice that's pounded into a sticky, elastic consistency. Mochi is beloved for its unique texture and is often enjoyed in Japan during special occasions or as a sweet snack. Mochiya takes this ancient treat and elevates it, fusing Japanese tradition with innovative flavours to create a delightful culinary experience.
